Hammock Yucatan

Mayan hammock / Mexican hammock / String hammock

Mayan hammocks are simply the most comfortable. They are handmade by skilled artisans from the Yucatan state in Mexico. The diamond weave adjusts to the weight and shape of the body perfectly. The support removes pressure points and thus allows the muscles of the body to relax. The feeling has been compared to floating on a cloud.

Mayan hammocks are very wide allowing to lie down in a diagonal position. Body weight is distributed evenly throughout the hammock. This is the adequate and ideal posture for sleeping, as the inhabitants of the Mayan zone have been doing for hundreds of years.

Mayan hammocks are also extremely comfortable because they provide good ventilation. They are light-weight, so string hammocks can be used for camping or taken to the beach. The main disadvantage is that it is easier to damage a string hammock with a sharp object.

The body of a Mayan hammock is available either in cotton, polyester or polypropylene (what people there call nylon)

The cotton fibre breathe and will stretch to adjust perfectly to the shape of your body making it the most comfortable.. We carry 2 sizes of yarn. The regular one (#9) is thinner and the most widely use while the thick cord hammocks (#24) are more resistant.

OUR THICK CORD HAMMOCKS ARE THE BIGGEST AND THE STRONGEST MAYAN HAMMOCKS. ENJOY YOURS FOR MANY YEARS !

The hammocks sold as nylon (which actually is polypropylene) made either with thin (#9) or thick (#24) fiber will not stretch. It is more like sleeping on a very firm surface. In southern Mexico, where summer heat is extreme, the nylon is used for it's capacity to resist humidity and perspiration.

We now offer a polyester Mayan hammock made with a special cordon yarn that will stretch and be very comfortable. This material is water resistant and perfect for shaded area.

String hammocks are most decorative as they come in exotic, tropical colors to create a relaxing exotic atmosphere. Our Mayan Hammocks from Yucatan are available in a large rainbow assortment of colors and combinations. Since they are hand made by creative artisans, no two are exactly alike.

Most hammock supplier consider this product as traditional and have been offering the same models for many years. We are different; Like what we did with the Morelos hammocks and chairs we try to innovate every year with new sizes or color patterns.

How to understand Mayan hammocks (Mexican hammocks) sizes?

The size of a string Mayan hammock is determined by the quantity of yarn used to weave it. On the market the standards are 0,9 kg for a single, 1.20 kg for a matrimonial, 1.4 kg for a family size and 1.70 kg for the biggest.

For the regular thinner yarn (#9) we work 2 hammock sizes. LARGE and XXL. Only the weight determine the amount of material that was used to weave the hammock, so it's size and the time needed to make it.

Thick cord and Morelos hammocks come in a JUMBO size.

Length is almost the same for each size. The difference is in the width of the hammock. The heavier, the wider/bigger is the hammock. As it is diagonally that we must lie in a hammock the width matters more then the length. The larger the hammock the more comfortable it will feel. This holds true even for one person. The general rule is to get the largest hammock you can reasonably afford.

Hammock retailers use different words to describe the size of their hammock. Don’t be fooled! A poor quality hammock with a loose weave will stretch more then a good one but will be less comfortable and will leave more marks on the skin. By experience I can assure you that a hammock woven with 3 spools of material (#3) and weighting 650gr (23oz.) will only fit a small person or a kid for a short period.

The only way to know if you are getting the right hammock is by considering it’s weight.

QUALITY

Apart from it's weight, a very important point to consider when you shop for a Mayan hammock is the type of weaving. The most comfortable ones are made with a 4 threads pattern, meaning that each yarn crosses 4 ones before coming back. This allows for a tighter weave with a lot less waffle marks on the skin.

Some thick cord hammocks us the 2 threads pattern. This way they make a cheaper, quite wide hammock, using less material and production time. The difference in comfort is important and you would feel it on your skin.

                           4 THREADS                                                         2 THREADS

Because of the biggersize of the cordon used the Morelos can just be made with 2 threads. To make them still very comfortable we make them tight and so big that you don't need to stretch it to fit many people.
